Margaret Ross - Psychotherapist

Diploma in Counselling, Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE) , accredited by the University of East London

Masters Degree in Psychotherapy and Art Therapy (Distinction) , Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE), accredited by the University of East London

I am a fully qualified psychotherapist and Integrative Arts Therapist with over 10 years experience of working both privately and within a multi-disciplinary team in the NHS.

I have knowledge and experience of working therapeutically with adults on the Autism Spectrum. I understand the particular challenges that may affect people with or without an official diagnosis.

My approach is person centred and geared to each individual client’s specific needs and difficulties. However, I am informed by both psychodynamic and CBT approaches, particularly by my training in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) which modified can be extremely helpful for clients on the Autism Spectrum.

I believe that the aim of therapy is to help the person involved move towards a more manageable relationship with their particular situation, which will be different for each individual. The therapeutic relationship offers a safe and confidential space to both explore and assist the person in thinking about their feelings and difficulties in a way that facilitates a positive outcome and a reduction in adverse symptoms and unhelpful patterns of behaviour.

I am also able to offer Art Therapy which combines talking with the possibility of using art materials. Creativity and Psychotherapy are inter-connected at a fundamental level, however the client does not need to have any previous experience or aptitude. The act of making images and objects can also help to reveal aspects of a person’s experience in the world that may be less accessible through words alone.

My particular areas of interest and experience are: Autism/ Neurodiversity, Anxiety/Depression, OCD, Eating disorders, Developmental trauma, Self harm and Domestic abuse.

Dr Sophie Ann Clifton - Clinical Psychologist

Sophie has extensive academic and clinical experience in the field of psychology. She has worked alongside people of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds, experiencing a broad range of mental health difficulties. These include depression, anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), workplace stress, attachment and relationship difficulties. Sophie is also experienced in working with members of both the LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse communities.

Sophie has an empathic and non-judgmental approach to others, and believes that building positive, trusting relationships is central to therapy. She also believes each person, and their difficulties, deserves a psychological approach tailored to their own, personal experience and preferences.

So she takes an eclectic approach, drawing on multiple psychological theories – cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), eye-movement desensitisation reprocessing (EMDR), and psychodynamic/relational approaches – to build an individualised and holistic approach, empowering each individual to embark on recovery and achieve their therapeutic goals.

Sophie also believes joy, fun and laughter to be fantastic remedies for distress, encouraging those she works with to inject this back into their lives! As a practising Buddhist, Sophie also enjoys drawing on relaxation, meditation, imagery and mindfulness techniques in her therapy, where appropriate.

Sophie achieved a 1st (with honours) in undergraduate psychology (BSc) from the University of Birmingham, as well as a Masters (MSc) in forensic psychology from the University of Surrey. She also holds a post-graduate certificate (PgCert) in evidence-based psychological therapies from the University of Reading, which she completed just before the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych; Coventry and Warwickshire course). Sophie’s specialist psychological interests are forensic psychology and neuropsychology, as well as trauma rehabilitation.

Most recently, Sophie completed her EMDR training through the EMDR Academy, and her ADOS/ADIR training to make her a qualified assessor of ASD in individuals of all ages.

Sophie accepts private referrals and is recognised by BUPA, WPA, Aviva, Vitality, AXA, and other insurers. She offers sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
